A Note From the Photographer
Hey there!
In case you are just getting to know me, Imma share a little bit of my backstory here, which is hefty, so how about just a brief intro? We can get into the details on our next photoshoot together. Read on:
I was fortunate to grow up with nature at my backdoor. From an early age my parents let me outside with our dogs, kinda sounds like I was raised by them, now that I think of it. I was allowed to explore the woods, streams, rivers, and fields of rural Ohio. “Be back by dinner” was the expectation, but not always the case : ) It was an ideal situation to cultivate my imagination and love for nature.
Photography has been with me ever since I was a youth. I can remember stacks of old Nat Geo from my grandma’s basement, and lost weekends spent at the downtown Columbus library pouring over books by the classic Magnum photographers. I also give credit to my Mom and Dad for my curiosity of this planet and all it’s inhabitants. As a kid they brought me up on World Book encyclopedia’s glossy photos, and a globe we’d spin to locate the next country we would have to study. To say photography has been a life long pursuit sounds cliche, but ask my wife about the boxes and boxes of prints & film negatives in our garage.
My desire to gain new knowledge and understanding of our planet led me to obtain an A.D. in Applied Sciences from Hocking Technical College in Fish and Wildlife Management (2002). Also, a B.A. from The Ohio State University in International Studies with a major in Latin America, and minor in Natural Resources Management (2006). I’m thankful for the past opportunities to travel/backpack/study/work abroad from northern Ontario’s Algonquin National Forest, to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, and points in between.
For over 15 years, starting in 2006, I worked with Heart of Ohio Family Health, a non-profit primary care medical clinic in Columbus, Ohio. I helped there in various capacities ranging from Spanish Interpreter/Caseworker, Call Center Supervisor, Social Services Coordinator, Facilities/Maintenance Supervisor, to Staff Photographer, while establishing and managing the clinic’s 1/4-acre community garden.
In 2012, I earned a certificate in Digital Photography from Columbus State Community College. The technical training and assignments from C-State broaden my abilities and confidence behind the camera. I obtained my FAA(part 107) drone license in 2021. Photography and highlighting the importance of clean water, sustainable agriculture, and the protection of our natural heritage, I’ve worked with The Nature Conservancy, Biohabitats, and American Farmland Trust to visually document environmental restoration projects throughout the United States. My love of nature, thirst for knowledge, and desire to help continually guide me in my goals of creating imagery that will inspire, captivate, and emotionally connect people to their environment.
Thanks for taking the time to connect with my artwork. Please consider me for any potential collaborative efforts that need documentation regarding the importance of nature.
Much Love, David
